Description

An arid but habitable world, far from Earth.

Conceptual piece done in photoshop, the star field was hand-made by me; the glaring sun is simply a glare effect; the planet surface is a sphere-ized amalgamation of Martian terrain (NASA map) and clouds from Earth (again NASA).

I really enjoyed making this - I might just get back into world-design again. Perhaps something a little more green - or blue?

Somewhere deep in space, there spins a bright star. This star is well into its long life, but has plenty of fuel left to spend. Orbiting this middle-aged inhabitant of deep-space is a rocky world, complete with an heterogeneous atmosphere quite capable of sustaining life.

However, at first glance, it appears as if the entire world is devoid of one life-sustaining substance: water. Could life survive without this precious liquid? Is there water somewhere down below, obscured or holed-up deep beneath the barren surface?
Shooting towards the surface at 75,000 miles and hour, the atmosphere thickens at an alarming rate: if you were physically there, plummeting at this rate, you would be fried. But we're not really here, so we are safe.

The surface is coming up quickly now, and... hold! Here we are, and this is what we see: from horizon to horizon there is nothing but dunes of rocky, rust-colored sand and rock. It looks a lot like pictures of Mars do, our close planetary neighbor. But there is a stark difference: the sky is an Earthly blue, thick and deep. And there are clouds - white clouds, heavy with moisture. So water does exist here, somewhere, or else those clouds wouldn't be here right?

If you look closely, sparse dun-colored thickets stem up from the rocky soil all around you. There is greater evidence that water exists here on this world, someplace distant. Perhaps there is a salty lake or vast ocean somewhere far away.

Just a description I felt I should add, detailing the planet a little.

I like the heterogeneity of the stars in this one
